Songhunter: The Songs of Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter
When I was in high school, my friends and I would sit in the courtyard at lunch and play guitar. I was very early in my playing, and enjoyed playing the simpler folk songs that my friends learned from the Dead albums. Some of these songs became a staple in my performances over the years.
Soon after learning songs like Goin' Dow the Road felling Bad, I Know You Rider, and Friend of the Devil, I headed down to Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls for the first of countless Dead shows. They began as carefully planned adventures, and evolved into a series of random spontaneous moments.
As the adventures took on greater intention, I realized how incredibly thoughtful the songs being played by the Dead were. At the heart of this was the songwriting of Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia. I recorded these songs with simplicity to bring forward the songs as they are. Mostly, I had fun making the record.
