Today is Woody Guthrie’s 114th birthday. This year I decided to release a collection of Woody Guthrie songs. I have always considered Woody Guthrie my promary influence, so it seems like this is something I should have done a long time ago. Good thing about these songs, is their timelessness. Generation after generation discovers this music and continues to carry it forward.
For me, I was in high school, and not long after I was traveling around the Midwest with my guitar in a Blueridge guitar bag, writing and playing these toons in subways, street corners, cafe’s, and where ever else they would let me sing. I especially enjoyed singing songs like I Ain’t Got No Home, Going Down the Road and This Train is Bound for Glory.
As I got a little older and started to establish my self, I was asked to sing these songs at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. That was in ’96. 30 years later I was called back to help support Woody at Home at the Rock Hall. Following that performance I went home and started recording some of hose songs.
I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with the recordings. Ultimately I chose to keep them raw and true to the performance. I liked the energy. I decided to let them be as you would likely hear me perform them live.
Anyhow, I am excited for the release today. The record is only available for streaming and downloads.
I have a small batch arriving soon for radio. If you would like a copy for your broadcast, please send an email to booking@charliemosbrook.com.
